Our Day
reporting Program has been in operation since early May 2006.
We use inmates
who have been furloughed due to overcrowding and these inmates must serve their
jail terms whenever space is available. These inmates are non-violent sentenced
inmates who are eligible to earn 1 day of their jail term for eight hours of
work. This program serves four basic needs in regards to the problem we have
with inmates who owe the courts jail time or who are convicted of a non-violent
crime.
1.)
Reduces the overwhelming number of days
furloughed inmates owe the courts.
2.)
Provides a workforce to serve the
community throughout the county to cleanup litter, cut grass, and improve the
appearance of various locations in need of cleaning up as well as providing car
washes and detailing for any Government vehicles.
3.)
Attempts to rehabilitate those
participating by providing some vocational training as well as trying to place
those who work well with prospective employers.
4.)
Gives the Judges another option to
alternative sentencing by sentencing the inmates directly to the day reporting
program.
At this time, this program costs the county no more than a bag lunch ($1.10) for each inmate per day compared to the $70.00 per day it would cost to house them in the jail.
